College English Teaching Department I, the School of Foreign Languages, was founded in 2003, but its teaching history dates back to the early 1980s. Currently together with faculties of College English Teaching Department II we are in charge of College English teaching and research of the University, and the daily operation of the Clinic for Foreign Language Learning at the School of Foreign Languages.
We boast a young and middle-aged conscientious teaching faculty devoted to a full range of research orientations. Now we have 50 full-time teachers, including 1 professor, 1 academic pacesetter, 7 MA supervisors, 12 associate professors, 4 PhDs, 42 master’s degree holders, and 4 PhD candidates.
According to the latest College English teaching program of Jiangsu University for non-English majors (2016), College English Teaching Department I is currently offering 4 types of College English courses, that is “Basic College English Courses”, “Advanced College English Courses”, “Intensive College English Courses” and “Elective College English Courses”. Concretely, the “Basic College English Courses” contain the general-purpose English lessons aimed at helping students reinforce the basic knowledge of general-purpose English and enhance their practical ability of the English language for daily communication; the “Advanced College English Courses” are mainly aimed at teaching the subject-oriented academic English (English for Academic Purposes, EAP) and the advanced English skills to keep pace with the international strategy of the University. These courses are offered to help senior students obtain professional English skills in related fields, to enhance their critical and innovative thinking abilities, and to meet the needs of students of various disciplines for international exchanges and overseas study; the “Intensive College English Courses” are also offered to teach general-purpose English, but to help students who fail to meet upon the completion of their compulsory English courses the “basic or intermediate requirements” to pass the CET-4 and the CET-6 by doing intensive training on their comprehensive English skills; the “Elective College English Courses” that constitute an important part of the University elective curriculum give lectures on individual English skills, culture and literature, and professional English, offered term by term in a row, with a view to meeting the students’ actual needs to promote their individual English skills, intercultural communication skills, and the workplace English skills.
We have always attached importance to teaching quality, upholding the “spirit of craftsmanship” ever cherished by all faculties of College English Teaching Department, and fixing the excellent teaching quality as our lifelong pursuit. To this end, in recent years the Department has promulgated a series of teaching management regulations, including “Guidelines for College English Teaching of Jiangsu University”, “College English Curriculum Quality Standards", “College English Classroom Instruction Procedures”, “College English Graded Teaching Procedures”, “College English Examination and Invigilation Procedures”, etc., with the purpose of ensuring that all faculties strictly abide by relevant teaching regulations and no teaching accidents occur throughout the year. We have achieved good teaching performance through the strict and standardized administration of the Department: in recent five years, the pass rate of CET-4 of the undergraduates taught by College English Teaching Department I have always been more than 90%, coming out in front among all Chinese universities; each year there are students winning prizes at the “FLTRP Cup” National English Speech Contest, the “FLTRP Cup” National Writing Contest, the “FLTRP Cup” National English Reading Contest, and the National College English Competition; the “College English” course has been ranked in succession among the “842” Key Construction Courses of Jiangsu University, the Top-Quality Online Courses of Jiangsu University, and the Top-Quality Online Course Candidates of Jiangsu Province; in 2012 the “College English” course won a second prize for the Educational Achievements of Jiangsu Province and a grand prize for the Teaching Achievements of Jiangsu University; between 2012-2016, faculties of College English Teaching Department I repeatedly won a grand, first and second prize for the National English Teaching Competition sponsored by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, a second prize for the National English Micro-lecture Competition sponsored by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, a second and third prize for the Teaching Contest of Jiangsu University, and other important prizes. In 2006, our department ranked among the first batch of “Demonstration Sites for College English Teaching Reform of the Chinese Ministry of Education”.
While attaching great importance to the quality of teaching, College English Teaching Department I also makes special effort to enhance the teaching research ability of its faculties. To this end, the Department set up in 2016 the “Jiangxin Academic Salon”, at which we would regularly carry out activities like teaching reflection, reading reporting, and research reporting to vigorously spur on ourselves to promote our teaching and research ability, academic writing ability and project application ability. The Department also regularly (every two weeks) holds a “Joint Teaching Exchange between Chinese and Foreign Teachers” at which they will readily exchange their teaching experiences. In November 2016, College English Teaching Department I and College English Teaching Department II jointly set up the “Clinic for Foreign Language Learning” to offer the services of “diagnosis and treatment” of the foreign language leaning obstacles for all students and faculties on campus. The successful operation of the Clinic was widely reported by such mainstream media as China Education Daily, Sina, and China Education Information Network with favorable responses at large. The establishment of the Clinic also provides an opportunity for teachers to discover the practical teaching problems. At present, College English Teaching Department I has formed several permanent teaching and research groups, including “College English Critical Reading Teaching and Research Group”, “College English Critical Writing Teaching and Research Group”, “College English EAP/ESP Teaching and Research Group”, “College English Teacher’s Professional Growth Research Group” and others. Up to now, the Department faculties have headed and completed nearly 20 research projects, including the “11th Five-year” Educational Science Planning Project of Jiangsu Province, the “12th Five-year” Educational Science Planning Project of Jiangsu Province,the “11th Five-year” and the “12th Five-year Projects of the Higher Educational Planning Project of Jiangsu Society of Higher Education, the Youth Project of the Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation of the Ministry of Education, the General Project of the Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation of the Ministry of Education, the “12th Five” Scientific Research Planning Project of the National Language Committee, the Philosophy and Social Sciences Project of Higher Institutions of Learning of Jiangsu Province, the Social Sciences Foundation Project of Jiangsu Province, the Teaching Reform Project of Jiangsu Province, and the Application Project of Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Philosophy and Social Sciences, in addition to a Youth Project of the National Social Science Foundation to be completed.
During the “13th Five-Year Plan” Period, College English Teaching Department I will carry forward the “Spirit of Craftsmanship” all College English teachers have taken pride in. We will try to explore the seamless docking of the internet and a traditional classroom, strengthen the awareness of teaching quality, and further enhance the quality of English teaching according to international standards. We will also strive to build the College English course into a provincial and national excellent course, and in the meanwhile establish a quality teaching faculty with a reasonable age structure and higher academic levels teaching and who will take lead in both teaching and research.
