Founded in 2001, the Postgraduate English Teaching Department is in charge of the instruction of more than 2000 postgraduates of Jiangsu University, including full-time candidates of a PhD and a master’s degree (comprising an academic and a professional degree), as well as candidates of Master of Engineering, MPACC, Master of Education, MBA and MPA. We boast a faculty of a sound age structure, of meticulous scholarship, and who are noted for their excellent teaching quality. The Department is divided into two teaching and research sections, that is the Postgraduate English Teaching and Research Section and the Minor Languages Teaching and Research Section. Together the Department has 16 full-time faculty members, including 5 associate professors and 11 lecturers. In addition, we hire 8 foreign teachers from Britain and America regularly each year. There are 4 teachers of minor languages, who take on the instruction of German and Russian to the undergraduates and postgraduates of the University. We have made outstanding achievements in our teaching work. In 2010 the Postgraduate English was honored as “Excellent Postgraduate Courses of Jiangsu Province”; in 2015, the course won a first prize of Postgraduate Teaching Model Reform of Jiangsu Province; in 2016 it is granted a second prize of the National Postgraduate Teaching Achievements. We have paced the whole nation in a number of reform achievements in English for Postgraduates of Non-English Majors.
Objectives:
We are aimed at keeping pace with the University’s strategic themes of constructing a “Double First-Class University” and an “international research-oriented university”, highlighting the philosophy of promoting the academic and international scientific competitiveness of excellent innovative talents through postgraduate foreign language teaching, and helping postgraduates lay a solid foundation of the English language on which they will be able to get access to the professional knowledge, to be informed of the latest achievements of international frontier researches, to promote their capability of international academic exchanges, and to cultivate their innovative capability of scientific research. We adopt the teaching concept of combining knowing with doing, and learning with practising, enhance the international atmosphere, and promote the postgraduates’ capability of carrying out professional learning, scientific research and international exchanges in English.
Course Orientation:
We try to expand the international vision of postgraduates of non-English majors and enhance their capability of carrying out international academic exchanges in a foreign language so that they will have the ability to understand their professional English literature readily and accurately; we try to raise the postgraduates’ level of English for the writing of a high-quality academic paper and reading and translating the professional literature; we cultivate their ability of understanding the academic lectures and lessons delivered in English. To fully respect the individual differences of students, we teach students according to their varied personality, according to their actual English proficiency, their potentials of language learning and their varied learning needs. We divide students into three groups, that is basic level of academic postgraduates, advanced level of academic postgraduates and level of professional postgraduates to fix corresponding teaching objectives for them and take into full consideration of the requirements for them in teaching contents, teaching methods, teaching assessment, etc. so that each student will get started at his or her own level.
Teaching and Research Reform:
In order to confront the educational challenges from the international community and meet the need of cultivating high-quality talents with international competitiveness, the faculty of Postgraduate English Teaching Department have studied the new situation of postgraduate English teaching reform in Jiangsu province on the basis of many years of teaching reform of ours against the backdrop of the national English teaching reform and have committed ourselves to teaching reform and curriculum system innovation to constantly improve the graduate English teaching system. The reform on postgraduate English teaching initiated in Jiangsu University in 2012 is aimed at carrying out an all-round reform on teaching idea, teaching system, teaching mode, etc. to explore an effective way to create a favorable international educational atmosphere by integrating both the Chinese and foreign quality teaching resources. In 2015 the Department won a first prize for Postgraduate Teaching Model Reform of Jiangsu University; in 2016 the Department won a second prize for National Postgraduate Teaching Achievements. Our English course has made outstanding contributions to further deepening the postgraduate education and teaching reform of the University and accelerating the construction of a high-level university.

In order to meet the postgraduates’ need for self-regulated learning and raise the level of English teaching in full scale, we have constructed the following learning resources in succession: Pronunciation Training System, Composition Checking System, Simulated International English Testing System, Listening Training System, Classic English Film Appreciation System, Academic Literature System for English-Chinese Classics, Frontier English Academic Papers System, and Oral Testing System.
