The Department of English Education was officially established in June 2017, but its history dates back to 1958 when the English Education Program was initially offered at Zhenjiang campus of Nanjing Teachers’ College (renamed Zhenjiang Teachers’ College in 1978).
Currently we boast 11 full-time faculty members, including 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 3 PhDs, and 7 lecturers. In addition we hire 4 foreign teachers and a number of guest professors throughout the year. The Department of English Education is mainly in charge of the instruction of undergraduates of the English Education Program of the School of Foreign Languages. Moreover, we take on the instruction and cultivation the Subject Instruction (English) postgraduates under the Master of Education Program and the Applied Linguistics postgraduates under the MA Program of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.
The English Education Program is aimed at cultivating the talented people with an international vision, who are willing to dedicate themselves to the cause of English education in China, who are proficient in both the English and the Chinese language and have an accomplishment in culture and good thinking and learning abilities, and who are eligible for the work of English instruction, pedagogical administration, and the research in related fields in primary and secondary educational institutions, independent training agencies and training classes affiliated to enterprises and institutions.
Through the effort of more than half a century under the banner of “cultivating an upright and knowledgeable teacher”, the Department of English Education has got the following advantages and features in talent cultivation: (1) In setting and carrying out cultivation objectives, we highlight both the characteristics of the Chinese pedagogical education and the requirements of an international vision, focusing on talents that will meet the needs of the English education in China and the demand on an English teacher on the international market; (2) The curriculum setting emphasizes both the training of basic English skills and the instruction of advanced pedagogical notions. On the one hand, we offer fundamental courses on listening, speaking, reading and writing to help students “lay a good foundation in basic language skills and broaden their scope of knowledge”; on the other hand, we offer such advanced courses as English Teaching Theory and Practice, Theory of Second Language Acquisition, English Testing Theory and Approach, Analysis of English Curriculum Standards and Teaching Materials for Primary and Secondary Schools, and Professional Development of a Foreign Language Teachers to inform students of the future orientation of the English instruction, to grasp the basic pedagogical theory and laws, to get acquainted with ideas and trends of different pedagogical schools both in China and abroad, to get to know the physical and mental features of their future students, to master the scientific pedagogical and teaching approaches and modern educational facilities, and to have a good command of the basic skills required of a teacher; (3) We actively explore the collaborative educational model between the institutions of higher learning and primary and secondary schools, strengthen the administration of students’ educational fieldwork and practice by adopting the strategy of “inviting primary and secondary school teachers into the classroom” and making the best of off-campus practice bases, and by effectively improving the classroom instruction and management capacity of the students majoring in English Education; (4) We will invite distinguished experts, scholars and professors in the field of English education both in China and abroad to give lectures in classroom to raise the students’ consciousness of academic research and their capability of doing a research, with the view of helping students meet the challenges arising from the demand of their future employers on English education researchers.
Currently the English Education faculty have completed 2 University-level Excellent Courses, published 2 monographs, are heading 4 projects of the state and the provincial or ministerial level, 4 projects of the city or department level, has won 1 second prize of Jiangsu Teaching Achievement, and 2 first prizes and 2 second prizes of Jiangsu University Teaching Achievements.
In recent years, the percentage of employment rate of our students has always been more than 95%. The employers of our graduates are mainly from schools and other educational institutions, foreign enterprises, banks, government offices, and others in Jiangsu, Zhenjiang, and Shanghai. Quite a lot of them have become the backbone of their companies or institutions.
